The peony flower was thought to possess powers of protection, and the ability to ward off storms, demons, and nightmares. A strong medicinal flower, it was named for the Greek physician of the gods, Paeon. The legend goes that Leto, goddess of fertility, told Paeon about a magical root that could soothe the pain of childbirth. His teacher, Asclepius, became jealous of him and threatened to kill him. Leto begged Zeus for help, who turned him into the peony flower, thus saving him.

Peony is a soft enamel pin with antique plating, black enamel, and measures approx. 1.5 inches in height.
